Both Makri and Livisi are built on the sites of important ancient Lycian settlements; Makri on the site of ancient Telmessos, and Livisi on the site of ancient Karmylassos.

Lycia, a settlement area since the third century BC, has created a unique culture with its own dialect and funerary architecture.

Other important cities of Lycia include Myra (which is home to the famous Church of Saint Nicholas), Limyra, Patara, Oinoanda, Tlos, and Xanthos.
According to the historian Strabo, the Gulf of Fethiye was named the Gulf of Glafkos by the king of the ancient city of Telmessos. Rock tombs, characteristic of the entire Lycian region, are also found in the Makri area; the magnificent Amintas rock tomb occupies a commanding position overlooking the city and its harbor.
Other remnants of its rich history include well-preserved sarcophagi, the remains of the ancient theatre of Telmessos, and, from a more recent past, a castle belonging to the Knights of Rhodes.
